Werewolves

A Werewolf (or as they are occasionally called - lycanthrope) is a mythological or folkloric human with the ability to shapeshift into a wolf (or a therianthropic hybrid wolflike creature), either purposely or after being placed under a curse or affliction (often a bite or scratch from another werewolf). Early sources for belief in this ability or affliction are called lycanthropy.

The nature of the werewolf gene.

The nature of the werewolf gene is primal and animalistic. When the individual activates the primal form (wolf form) it can take years of practice to learn how to tap into the human mind while in this form and train the two to work in unity. Until then, the individual is usually unstable and unpredictable. Until such a time, the individual will change with the phases of the moon without control.
If the individual has no control over their primal form, their mind when in human form can become clouded and rigid and they may have trouble differentiating between the two.
More often than not they become quick to anger and are unusually aggressive. These are some of the reasons an individual needs to have a pack to fall back on.

How to become a werewolf.

There are a few ways in which one can become a werewolf. The most common is to be bitten or scratched by a werewolf. However, there are several things to consider in this case and all these factors will attribute to who your character is, and who they will become.

Viral Affliction.

Viral Affliction is presented when an individual is bitten by a werewolf.
The werewolf must be in its primal form (wolf) to produce the venom required to turn a human. Therefore the gene is active and will pass to the recipient as an active gene.
Werewolf venom is contained within the saliva of the primal form. A bite almost always only occurs when the inflicter is unstable, usually during their first primal turn, or during a forceful full moon turn. It is during this time that they are overrun by the animalistic side of themself and lose most, if not all of their human reasoning. This is because in an uncontrolled shift the werewolf is frightened and embodies the true nature of a wild wolf. Quite often in this mindless state, the fear overrides all recognition and the wolf may not even recognize it's own pack mates. Therefore, in its madness, if the wolf feels trapped or cornered it will lash out and bite regardless of consequence.
This can also occur by the presence of a scratch from the nails, however, it is less likely to carry the venom unless the wolf has been in primal form for some time and has groomed its claws with its tongue, thereby transferring the gene from the mouth to the claws.
However, as with every rule, there is always an exception. A mature werewolf who is in complete control of their body and their animalistic qualities can control their venom and the ability to produce it. This can enable them to produce the venom even in human form. This is done by changing the shape of their jaw to physically move the venom ducts to the position that they would be in wolf form, where they can combine with saliva and coat the mouth.

Heredity

One may be born with the werewolf gene. there are two known ways of carrying the gene.

Dormant Gene.
If the child has one human parent and one werewolf parent, then the gene will become dormant. However, not all children born to this dynamic have the werewolf gene. There is a chance that the human gene will dominate.
When the child is born with a dormant gene, the gene is only awakened when the person carrying the carrier kills another human or animal. This can be an accident or consequently, premeditated. Though no one truly knows why this happens, it is thought that the primal actions of the killing awaken the animalistic and survivalist instinct of the wolf gene.
The werewolf gene can go undetected for hundreds of years if the person born with the dormant gene does not make a kill in their lifetime.
If there is a local pack in the area and someone awakens the dormant gene, the pack is likely to feel them during their first phase of turning through a metaphysical tether in their pack lands.

Active Gene.
An active werewolf gene is when the carrier changes forms from human to werewolf. Whether or not they can control the shift.
A child can only be born with an active werewolf gene if both of the parents carry an active werewolf gene.
An active werewolf gene in a child means that the child will be born and it will change to wolf form if it is exposed to the full moon.
Activating the primal form is usually done when the child reaches an appropriate age. This is because when the gene is activated for the first time, and sometime after, the individual will be unstable and become a liability to themselves and others around them if not properly tended to. It takes years of coaching for the individual to gain full control over their primal form and to have a coherent mind between wolf and human in wolf form.
